You were behind me:
At some point you were dependable.
Lord knows my lonely soul ached for
somebody I could count on since I’m
usually the one everybody else counts on.
But when I turned,
there was the wrangling of crows:
The crows were
fighting over dead bones and meat.
As soon as I realized it was you
my heart skipped a beat as I
attempted to run after you and
stop the crows from disrespecting your corpse.
And the long grass rising in the wind:
Then it hit me
like a ton of bricks
was just dropped on my
heart and soul. You were gone.
You’d been dead for a while.
The grass had been growing for years,
but I’d just now realized it.
