As I look to the night sky and contemplate the stars,
I begin to wonder what happened to the Martians on Mars.
In the vast night sky and the emptiness of space
there is no way that we are totally alone in this place.
We always think and believe that we are the pinnacle of creation,
but what if we never have and never will hold that station.
Maybe we can let go of our inflated opinion of ourselves
when we find out that we are not the only ones on this shelf.
Perhaps we can find the answers to who, when, and why
as we look up and meditate on the night sky.
Who we are and where we come from
and why there is nothing new under the sun,
because night or day the sky has seen it all
it has watched nations rise and empires fall.
It will be here long after we are dead and gone,
long after the world has forgotten the words to our song.
Maybe we will go the way of the Martians on Mars,
or maybe we will fly out to visit the stars.
I thought these questions were deep and profound
but it is quite possible that it is all vanity, just noise and sound.
Maybe I’ll never know exactly why
so perhaps I’ll just enjoy the night sky. | SL
